To answer your question...the charger plates are always in place when the guests are seated. Then the soup, fish or salad course are served with the charger remaining in place. Usually, the charger plate is removed prior to the serving of the entree or dinner course. But some folks who really enjoy the appearance of the charger will leave it in place even during the entree part of the dinner. The charger plate should always be removed before the dessert course, though.
